The Challenge

South Africa continues to face high level of inequality and poverty which leads to an increased risk for mental health conditions, and limited access to healthcare services.

Approximately 1 in 6 children will live with a mental health condition at any given time in South Africa. Of these, only 25% will receive the necessary treatment.

Our Solution

We immerse ourselves in under-resourced communities, educate and spread awareness about ADHD and provide free mental health screening. We identify children in need of intervention and assist them in accessing the necessary community-based services as well as utilising the services of our pool of professional volunteers. We aim to remove mental health barriers to education and in doing so improve the quality of life of children and families and provide the opportunity for them to reach their full potential.

What are the barriers to accessing treatment?

Main-10

Lack of knowledge and awareness of ADHD and mental health conditions.

Main-11

Overburdened state healthcare services.

Main-12

Complicated referral pathways

Main-13

Stigma surrounding mental health.

Main-14

Lack of financial means to access healthcare.

How does the foundation address these barriers?

We conduct free screening for ADHD and other mental health conditions and refer children for appropriate interventions.

We partner with various government departments, volunteers, students and
community-organisations to offer holistic assessments and interventions.

We offer training to teachers, parents, and community organisations with the aim of empowering them in identifying children who would benefit from mental health screening. We also offer information on how to support children with mental health conditions in the school and home environment.

We spread awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding ADHD and mental health disorders, focusing on children and adolescents.

Early intervention is crucial. Children who are not identified and do not receive the necessary mental health care are at an increased risk for leaving school prematurely, developing secondary psychiatric conditions, substance abuse, risky behaviours, physical health problems and accidental injury.
