The Challenge

South Africa continues to face high levels of inequality and poverty which leads to increased risk for mental health conditions and lack of access to appropriate services.

1 in 6 children will suffer from a mental health condition at any given time in South Africa, of which only 25% will receive treatment.

Our Solution

By immersing ourselves in under-resourced communities, education and spreading awareness about ADHD, providing free ADHD and mental health screening, we are able to help children and families access the appropriate services within the Department of Health. We aim to remove mental health barriers to education and in doing so improve the quality of life and opportunities of children in.

I WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

What are the barriers to accessing treatment?

Main-10

Lack of knowledge and awareness of ADHD and mental health conditions.

Main-11

Overburdened state healthcare services.

Main-12

Complicated referral pathways

Main-13

Stigma surrounding mental health.

Main-14

Lack of financial means to access healthcare.

How does the foundation address these barriers?

We conduct free screening for ADHD and other mental health conditions and refer children for appropriate interventions.

We partner with the various government departments, volunteers, students and
community-organisations to offer holistic assessments
and interventions.

We deliver training to teachers, parents and community organisations, providing them with necessary skills.

We spread awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding ADHD and mental health disorders, focusing on children and adolescents.

Early intervention is crucial. Children who do not receive early mental health care intervention are at an increased risk of developing secondary co-morbid psychiatric conditions, leaving school prematurely and an increased risk of physical health problems and injury.
