First-time runner Emma Hallas channels personal loss into fundraising triumph for GB4ADHD
When 27-year-old Cape Town resident Emma Hallas received a surprise entry into the 2025 London Marathon, she didn’t see it simply as a sporting opportunity. With no previous running experience, the challenge ahead was daunting. But for Emma, this marathon became something far greater than a physical test. It became a deeply personal mission.
Three years after losing her brother to suicide, Emma made a powerful decision: she would dedicate her marathon journey to raising funds and awareness for mental health support. In honour of his memory, she chose to turn her training into an act of service for others who are struggling.

“I never saw myself as a runner,” Emma shared. “But when this opportunity came up, I knew I had to make it count. Mental wellness is incredibly close to my heart, and if my training can help others access the support they need, every kilometer will be worth it.”

Through her determination, vulnerability, and compassion, Emma launched a fundraising campaign in support of Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary. By the time her campaign concluded, Emma had raised over R90,000, funds that will directly support our free mental health screening, early intervention, and referral services for children and families in under-resourced communities.
Emma’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of loss, hope can be created. Her journey reflects everything we stand for at Goldilocks and the Bear: turning care into action, and ensuring that mental health support is accessible to those who need it most.
Hallas’s determination and compassion have made her an inspiration to young people across the Western Cape, demonstrating how personal challenges can become powerful catalysts for community change.
From all of us at Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation: thank you, Emma. Your courage, generosity, and heart have made a lasting difference. You are truly one of our Mental Health Heroes.
